Valentines Park, Ilford – memories, memories

Over 55 years ago my mother used to bring me to Valentines Park and I was amazed to see figs growing there.  A few years later I went to the school adjacent to the park so got to know it well.  val pYou can just spot the school behind the trees in this photograph of the ornamental lake.

I learnt to swim in the long defunct outdoor lido during the summer term (Freezing in April) and watched Essex play their county cricket games in the park after school – a very good way to chat up boys.

I am glad to see the park is still as nice as it was then and that the stream where we used to catch sticklebacks is still there.

There is a second cafe by the bandstand near the large boating lake and afterwards the children can burn off calories in a large well equipped playground and us oldies can use the outdoor gym equipment

The boating lake is open in the summer.  It is worth walking to the lake to see the lovely boat house building

There are two pay and display car parks and metered street parking.  It is great to see that the old drinking fountain is still in place near to the Valentines Road entrance and car park.
