The Peak, Hong Kong

hk night

Visiting The Peak is a must for everyone and is one of our favourite things to do when we are visiting our grandchildren in Hong Kong.

Try to visit during the day and then come back for the night time views. If you are at The Peak at 8 pm on a clear evening you will be able to see some of the light show that takes place in the harbour below.

There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops at The Peak in The Peak Tower and The Peak Galleria.

The Peak Galleria, above the bus station and taxi rank, has a has a glass elevator which goes to a free viewing terrace. The top of the Peak Tower, which is above The Peak Tram, has a viewing terrace with an entrance fee.

The Lion’s Pavilion is a short walk from The Peak Tower and we suggest that you walk take a few minutes to go a little further along the path (Findley Road) to get away from the crowds.

The Peak Circle Walk is gentle, circular, buggy friendly walk around the The Peak, and we have created one of our quiz walks that you can complete as you go. There are also fitness trails, a playground and walking routes that descend to Central Hong Kong and to Aberdeen.

Bus 15 to the peak 2aOur favourite way to go to The Peak is by bus number 15. The views from the bus are superb as it climbs up to The Peak. You will be able to see Kowloon on the far side of Victoria Harbour and Aberdeen on the south side of the island. The bus also gives great views over The Hong Kong Racecourse in Happy Valley.

After 10 am the bus starts from The Star Ferry Pier. Before 10 am it starts at Exchange Square Bus Station.

The buses run every 7 – 15 minutes and continue late into the evening. The journey can take between 35 – 65 minutes depending on the traffic.

The fare is $9.80 HKD (less than £1 and just over 1 USA$). The driver does not give change so try to have the exact fare.

Public Light Bus Route 1 – a green minibus – also goes to The Peak from MTR Hong Kong Station public transport interchange. It takes a different route and is usually faster than bus no 15. We like to go up to The Peak on bus15 and take the green minibus or a taxi back to Central Hong Kong.

hk the peak tramThe most famous way to reach The Peak is via The Peak Tram. It is a funicular railway that has been serving The Peak since 1888. At the top of the railway is The Peak Tower with viewing platform (admission charge).

BUT BEWARE – The tram is very popular and you can find yourself waiting in long queues to board especially at weekends, holidays and in the evenings.

Getting There Peak Tram from the Peak Tram Lower Terminus on Garden Road (reach it by taking the special bus service from outside the Star Ferry pier in Central, or walk from MTR Central Station, Exit J2.) .
Alternatively take Bus 15 from Exchange Square bus terminus (near MTR Hong Kong Station, Exit D) or Star Ferry after 10 am Green Minibus 1 from MTR Hong Kong Station public transport interchange
