The Geffrye Museum

'© Geffrye Museum, London: Photograph by David Clarke’The Geffrye is a delightful museum, an ocean of calm a short distance from the bustle of Liverpool Street and Shoreditch.

Set in a series of old almshouses, you are drawn both ‘through the keyhole’ and back in time into living rooms across the ages.

It is great fun for the ‘Mayhems’ to spot small items in the rooms and even greater fun for the Papas and Mamas to point out things that were in their houses when they in turn were young ‘Mayhems’!

11 rooms showcase furniture that would be found in ‘middle class’ homes ranging from 1630 to 1998.

Twenty five years ago, we would bring our girls here for a dose of history followed by tea in the garden room. Now your ‘Mayhems’ can borrow a toy tea set in a picnic hamper and follow the trail to the garden room, where they can play at having a tea party.

At the back of the almshouses is walled herb garden and a series of small gardens showing how gardens have changed throughout time

© Geffrye Museum, London’During school holidays and on weekends they run some great craft activities for children. The workshops are free and are on first-come, first-served basis.

There is a drop in ‘quiz desk’ with trails, mask making and other free activities every Saturday and Sunday afternoon and also during school holidays. You might see me there as I volunteer to help out!

The Quiz desk provides quizzes, trails, activity back-packs and a box full of mystery objects. The younger children love colouring and making masks.

The original garden room cafe has been moved into a new extension and now provides a range of snacks and meals.
