Texas – Papa Joe and Grandma Jacqui’s Road Trip

A family wedding in Denver – whoops – the direct flights from the UK are fully booked!

OK – let’s use some lateral thinking and go via Texas – not the most obvious routing but it worked for us and we had a superb road trip.

Papa Joe and I flew into Dallas/ Fort Worth Airport and spent a few days getting over our jet lag in the brilliant Stockyards Historical District, before flying to Denver. After the wedding we flew to Houston, hired a car and drove via The Gulf of Mexico, to San Antonio. We then drove through the Texas Hill Country to Fredericksberg  and then continued to Austin.

Here are some of the highlights

  • The Texas State Fair – fried everything to eat and pig racing – what more could you and The Mayhems want?

How do you fry lemonade?

  • Following in the footsteps of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson – Dallas and the assassination, The LBJ ranch near Fredericksburg and The LBJ Presidential Library in Austin. This one is for the older Mayhems
  • ‘Houston, we have lift off’  The behind the scenes one day ‘Level 9 VIP tour of NASA’. (12 participants – age 14+). Other tours run throughout the day which are suitable for younger Mayhems.

  • Going on board The Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum moored in Galveston and wandering around the nearby Strand Historic District
  • The aircraft carrier USS Lexington moored at Corpus Christi. It was amazing standing on the huge flight deck and exploring below decks on this ‘museum’.

  • The Alamo and San Antonio – history, art, lovely walks along the riverside, the great tex mex food , and of course drinking Margaritas by The San Antonio River watching the boats glide by.

  • The National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg – The guided tour of the outdoor Pacific Combat Zone gave you some idea of what the soldiers had to cope with. The  main museum had superb exhibits and explanations of how the war was fought.
  • Great music and food everywhere
