Poole Museum and Scaplen’s Court

Would you like to design your own museum? Well you can – by using Poole Museum’s special ‘DIY Museum’. It has all sorts of small bits and pieces in the drawers and The Munchkins, hopefully without quarrelling, can decide what to display on the shelves.

Poole Museum has a lot of interactive, non electronic, exhibits that The Munchkins can explore. During school holidays, volunteers are on hand to lead story sessions and hands on events. While we were visiting a ‘Roman’ was letting children handle artifacts and the toy shop was being used to demonstrate old toys.

Set back from Poole Quay in the old town, the museum has been modernised and has a rather striking glass and steel entrance. The new structure incorporates a terrace which gives you good views over the town and harbour. We sat relaxing on the terrace with a pot of tea watching the world go by.

As we entered the museum, my memories were immediately triggered by the the ceramic sign. As a child we would come to Bournemouth every year, walk along the prom, and when we reached the borough boundary would see this sign.

Poole was home to several potteries and one floor is devoted to the industry. The munchkins played happily designing their own tile designs allowing us to look at the other  nearby exhibits.

We also went to Scaplen’s Court, an old medieval town house beside the museum. The physic and herb garden is open from late May to September, but the main house is only open in August as it is used for schools during the rest of the year.

If you are nearby when it is open, you must take the opportunity to visit. It is fascinating.
