Pevensey Court House and Gaol

If tThe Mayhems are driving you mad then I have the perfect place for you
– the stocks at The Old Court House in Pevensey!!

The Old Court House Museum is in a delightful 16th century building in the centre of Pevensey Village which is near Eastbourne.  It is a tiny museum, packed full of interesting memorabilia.

The local residents run the museum and we were greeted by extremely helpful and enthusiastic volunteers.

The old court room is on the first floor and still has a prisoner’s dock .

The adjoining room acted as the magistrate’s robing room and has a model of a beadle in his uniform on display.  You can also see the oldest surviving Cinque Ports seal and a William I silver Pevensey minted penny

Until 1886 the building was also the Pevensey Town Hall.

Of course the area that caught the mayhem’s imagination were the prisoners cells on the ground floor.  One has been restored so that you can see what conditions were like for the prisoners.  Only two cells remain of the original six.

The last time the cells were used was during The Second World War to house a German Airman captured when his plane crashed nearby.

In the next room among the farming tools are the stocks.  Still it was better being put in the stocks than being executed by hanging in nearby Gallows Lane.
