Old Operating Theatre

If you have a budding Harry Potter who wants to mix potions with herbs,  or a doctor-to-be, I have just the place for you.
Tucked away near London Bridge is the Old Operating Theatre & Herb Garret.  This little museum is a fascinating place filled with medical curios and an array of herbs.  It is one of the most unusual museums in London, and is the oldest operating theatre in Europe.

Suitable for over 8s and not for the faint hearted!

You enter the museum through a windy, narrow 32 step spiral staircase not suitable for buggies. The Old Operating Theatre was actually built up in the roof of St Thomas’ Church with the hospital built around it. If you are unable to visit then you must look at the virtual tour on the website.

Medical equipment

The museum is split into two parts.

The first part has the Old Operating Theatre (Europe’s oldest), a display of scary looking medical equipment from olden times and perennial children’s favourite – body organs in jars.

The second part features interesting displays on herbs that were used for St Thomas’s Apothecary.  You can even learn how to roll pills using playdough.  There’s also a kids activity station with crayons, colouring in sheets, books and puzzles to play with.

Why not combine a trip to the Old Operating Theatre & Garret with a ride on the river Thames?
The departure point for the Thames Clipper is a few minutes walk away, and you can ride it all the way to Greenwich. See On the Thames – Thames Clippers
