It doesn’t have to cost the earth – outings for the under 6s

Our tips to save money

  1. Take advantage of low season offers. During school holidays prices for for attractions and some soft play centres go up.
  2. Always check to see if buying tickets to attractions online will save money.
  3. Decide if it is worthwhile buying a season ticket or becoming a member of an organisation such as The National Trust or your  local leisure centre.

Here are a few suggestions for fun, low cost things to do with younger children.

  1. Ride on top of a double decker bus.

My friend Janet says that this is her 6 year old grandson’s favourite thing.  He loves sitting at the front and pointing out different things.  If you are in London, children travel free on London Transport buses and trams – see details here
  2. Check what your local authority sure start schemes have to offer. As grandparents we sometimes miss out on being given information on what is available for a small or no charge in our local areas.
  3. One o’clock clubs. Many boroughs have one o’clock clubs in the local parks.  These are drop in centres where parents and carers can take preschool children.
  4. Try one of our quiz walks.

Toddlers may be too young to do the quiz, but each walk we have compiled is in an area with lots of things to look at and of places to stop.  We have indicated if the walk is buggy friendly.
  5. Visit a city/community farm.  The Federation of City Farms & Community Gardens has a website where you can find your nearest community farm.  These are community projects run by volunteers; unlike commercial farming attractions they are either free or have a small entrance charge.  They usually rely on donations, and may have a cafe, shop, or horse riding lessons to provide extra incomedeen sheep
  6. Visit the Library.  Most libraries run story time and activities for children and have children’s videos and books to borrow
