Home Made Play Dough

“Granny Playdoh, Granny Playdoh”

Daisy excitedly called out as we saw each other after an absence of 3 months.

I had introduced Daisy to Playdoh when she was 2 and had been staying with Papa Joe me for 3 weeks.  It really was a winner.

All the Mayhems seem to love playing with it, but I do find that the commercial Playdoh tends to dry out between visits.

I remembered making a version for my own children so scoured the internet and have found this recipe.  I usually have all the ingredients in my cupboard.  The children can help to make it

play doughPlay Dough Recipe:  the exact measurements are not too critical!

1 cup / 120 gms  plain white flour –
1/2cup / 60gms cup salt (a lot of salt but this helps to preserve it)
2 tablespoon cream of tartar – (used for cake baking)
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup/250ml water
food coloring

Mix the flour , salt, cream of tartar and oil together in a pan. Add water and mix well.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 – 5 minutes.
The dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump”.
Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes– add food coloring as you knead.

The play dough should keep for a long time stored in a covered plastic container or plastic sandwich bag.
