Amazing who you meet in Hampton Court Palace Gardens

henry 8What is the etiquette when you meet a king and his cardinal strolling through their gardens   Should you bow and curtsey or say ‘How do you do Sire?’

It was lovely to meet the owners of Hampton Court Palace, originally it belonged to Cardinal Wolsey and then Henry VIII.

We were lucky to meet both of them as the gardens are very large, over 66 acres  of formal gardens, and a large deer park bordering the River Thames. A herd of fallow deer roam the deer park.

We came in May when there is a charge for the formal gardens.  We decided not to buy a ticket for the formal gardens but were still able to visit the rose garden, wilderness and area by The Tiltyard Café.  There is also a picnic area near the car park.  The paths are suitable to push a buggy on and there is a lot of grass to run around on.

tiltyardWe picnicked on a bench but we could have gone to The Tiltyard Café, with ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ menu for children as it is in the section of the garden that is free to enter,

In the winter and early spring all the gardens are free apart from the Maze and there is still plenty to see at that time of the year,  Charging starts when British Summer Time starts.

After lunch we walked over to the maze.  It dates from the 1700’s and covers a third of an acre.  Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to conquer it.  You could always cheat and take a picture of the sign before you go in!

All children must be accompanied by an adult so you can’t abandon them in the maze and go to the café without them for some peace and quiet.
