You know the saying.  Plan for the worst, and hope for the best.  With this in mind, here are our top five medical items to have available if you are looking after little ones.

Keep a first aid kit at home and consider taking some basic items with you on trips.

Check when you are babysitting your Mayhems you know where their parents keep their medicines. It is also a good idea to know who their local GP doctor is.

* Thermometer.-   They come in all shapes and sizes – digital ear thermometers (check that yours is suitable for babies before you use it) –  digital thermometers shaped like dummies,- thermometer strips which are placed on the forehead and give an approximate temperature.

* Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.  Calpol is probably the best known brand of children’s paracetamol. Both are available in sachet form which is convenient for occasional use.  – A good idea is to have a plastic oral syringe with a measuring scale on it to get the medicine in the child and not down the bib!

* Antihistamine.  Piriton syrup is probably the best known brand.

* Vapour rub.  Vicks is probably the best known brand, and is often used on the soles of the feet at night to soothe a cough.

Please remember that we are not healthcare professionals, we are just trying to help you to get a basic kit together.

If in doubt, UK residents can contact their GP surgery or NHS 111 or speak to a pharmacist.

In an emergency ring your local medical emergency service (999 if in the UK).
