Colonial Williamsburg USA – a revolution in the air!

It seems odd to see The Union Flag flying over an American town but in Colonial Williamsburg it is 1775 and The American Revolution is still a year away.

Suddenly we heard the sound of fife and drums down the street. The militia were on their way.

In the surrounding buildings the townspeople were going about their business, craftsmen were in their workshops and the taverns were doing good trade. Inside the buildings daily life was carrying on.

The atmosphere is so good that only the presence of the 20th century tourists make you realise that you are in a superb living-history museum which re-creates the atmosphere of 18th century colonial America. There are dozens of authentic or re-created buildings on the site.

The Governor’s Palace

Everywhere you will come across re-enactors who work, dress, and talk as they would have in colonial times.

We first came here with our daughters over 25 years ago and liked the experience so much we all returned a few years later. Recently Papa Joe and I decided to revisit and had a wonderful time. This will be just the place to bring our munchkins when they are older.

You can wander around the streets freely but if you want to enter the buildings and museums you have to buy a ticket.

The ticket also allows you to use the shuttle buses that circle the area. This was great when our daughters were teenagers as they were able to tour around the site with a degree of freedom from us.
