Candlelight Nights – a 100 year old Bournemouth Tradition

When I was little we came to Bournemouth every summer and a highlight was the traditional candle lighting in The Lower Winter Gardens.

Fast forward 30 years and Papa Joe and I took our daughters to do the same thing. It didn’t matter if someone had already lit the candles in the glass holders because you would just blow them out and relight them. So you can imagine where we will be bringing the Munchkins on a summer Wednesday night.

The event has changed since it started in 1896 and now takes place from dusk on Wednesday evenings during the summer school holiday period.

The glass holders are filled with tea lights in the late afternoon and you can then collect free tapers from a stall near the crazy golf. Just remember to bring some matches to relight the tapers!

There are usually other activities on offer to keep the children amused when they have finished lighting. Check out the Bournemouth Tourist website for more information.
