Buckingham Palace – Changing The Guard with Christopher, Alice and The Mayhems

changing Guard 1‘They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.’

When I was little, my mother used to say  A. A. Milne’s poem (see below) to me as we watched the soldiers changing guard at Buckingham Palace.

You could peer through the railings at Buckingham Palace and watch the soldiers marching up and down quite clearly.

Recently we decided to take all 3 munchkins to see ‘The Palace’ and The Changing of The Guard.

They were very excited and we timed our visit carefully so they weren’t overwhelmed but got good views. The Changing The Guard Ceremony is very popular to watch but if you follow our timings you can avoid the worst of the crush.

After watching the ceremony, we took a picnic to eat on the grass in St James’s Park. Then the 3 girls played in the excellent nearby playground while we had a coffee from the kiosk beside it.

Here are our tips for a stress free visit

1) Aim to be walking along The Mall near St James’s Palace at about 10.50 am (Mon to Sat) to watch The Household Cavalry ride to Horse Guards Parade.

On a Sunday, the Horse Guards ceremony takes place an hour earlier so be in the Mall about 9.50am

2) Walk around by Buckingham Palace or through St James’s Park to The Wellington Barracks aiming to get there about 11.10am.

The Foot Guards with their band assemble for inspection at Wellington Barracks (Birdcage Walk) from 11 am. This is an excellent place to watch and take photos. After inspection the band play in the parade ground.

The Guards then march out the gates at approximately 11.25 so just before this time cross Birdcage Walk so that you are opposite the gate to get a good view.
